Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy of teaching centers around the creation of an environment that allows for supervised experimentation. I believe that in the arts everyone's process and goals are unique, and creating a curriculum that allows everyone to find their most effective process is crucial. By setting an attainable goal I am then able to offer assistance in the development of each individual’s process as they make their way through each step of the curriculum. In addition to encouraging the development of unique creative processes, my teaching method also aims to lay the groundwork for a future in a highly collaborative field.

I believe that individual oriented teaching is far more effective. Through 1 on 1 and small group education I can assess the needs of everyone. This allows me to tailor the curriculum for each individual and offer more effective assistance on their way towards outcomes. By following everyone throughout their project I can offer an introduction to collaborative work as well as provide additional assistance and guidance to those who need it, creating an all-around more inclusive classroom environment.

I believe that development of proper critique skills is an extremely crucial factor in the development of future artists. I find that structured critique at specific points during the project process allows individuals to reflect on their own work and that of their peers. This can often open them up to further experimentation in their own work. With regular critique in the classroom individuals learn the vocabulary of their field and become more comfortable discussing their work.

I believe that teachers should always demonstrate curiosity in their field as this curiosity can often be contagious to those around them. Education is something that never stops and that has only become truer in our constantly evolving technological landscape. My teaching method aims to encourage the use of modern technology while still understanding the roots from which our field has grown.

I believe that Galileo captured these ideas most effectively with his statement “You cannot teach a man anything, you can only help him find it within himself.” My teaching philosophy really aims to guide each individual through experimentation and carefully curated curriculum to their greatest future potential as a theatrical artist.
